MAN ARRESTED AFTER ALLEGEDLY PUSHING WOMAN ONTO TRAIN TRACKS

A man has been charged with a string of offences hours after he allegedly pushed an elderly woman onto the tracks in front of horrified commuters at one of Melbourne's busiest train stations.

Emergency crews were called to Richmond station on Wednesday afternoon after a woman was allegedly pushed from the platform.

Bystanders rushed to the aid of the woman, 64, and pulled her back onto the platform as the man allegedly fled.

She was taken to Alfred Hospital in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said she didn't know her alleged attacker. 

 The incident caused major delays at train stations across the CBD during the evening peak period.

A Werribee man, 54, was arrested in Southbank on Thursday morning.

The man was charged with conduct endangering life, conduct endangering serious injury, reckless conduct causing injury and unlawful assault of a female.

He has also been charged with several unrelated offences including burglary, theft, aggravated burglary, trespass, unlawful assault and make threats to kill.

The further charges relate to two recent burglaries and thefts of businesses in Footscray and an aggravated burglary at a hotel in Southbank on Thursday morning before his arrest.

He was remanded in custody to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court next Friday (July 12).
