PRISON OFFICER, 28, ACCUSED OF INAPPROPRIATE RELATIONSHIP IN COURT

This is the bizarre moment a female prison officer accused of having an 'inappropriate relationship' with an inmate and smuggling in codeine left court wearing no shoes.

Kelsey Calvert, 28, allegedly began a relationship with the male inmate while working at HMP Holme House, a category C men's prison in Stockton-on-Tees.

The alleged affair, and smuggling of medication, are said to be dated back to 2022.

Kelsey, of Shadwon Close, Ryhope, Sunderland appeared at Teesside Magistrates' Court today for a count of being the holder of a public office willfully neglected to perform duty, and one count of bringing a prohibited article - codeine - into prison.

Following the hearing, she left court draping a black jacket around her face to shield her identity, but strangely wore no shoes and walked across the pavement barefooted.

The first offence she faces states: 'On and before November 22, 2022 at Cleveland while acting as a public officer, namely prison staff, wilfully and without reasonable excuse or justification misconducted yourself in a way which amounted to an abuse of the public's trust in the office holder by having an inappropriate relationship with an inmate.'

Her second count states: 'Prior to November 22, 2022 at Cleveland without authorisation brought, threw or otherwise conveyed a substance, namely Codeine which was specified by section 40A(2) of the Prison Act 1952, into or out of his majesty's prison situated at Holme House, Stockton.'

Calvert did not enter any pleas to the offences during the brief morning hearing and the case was sent to Teesside Crown Court due to its severity.

District Judge Steven Hood, said: 'The two matters you face are matters that can only be heard at the crown court.'
