CALL FOR NEW FIREFIGHTING RECRUITS IN WEST SUSSEX

West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service is seeking new recruits to join its on-call crews across the county.

New recruits are needed in Chichester, Midhurst, Petworth, Selsey, East Wittering, Arundel, and Littlehampton.

Residents who live near these fire stations can attend an event at Chichester Fire Station on Saturday to get a feel for the role of a firefighter by taking part in simulated activities and drills.

Christopher West, watch manager at East Wittering Fire Station, said on-call firefighters made a "huge difference in keeping your community safe".

On-call firefighters, also known as retained firefighters, respond to emergencies in their local area either from their home or workplace.

They can be called to a range of incidents such as fires, road traffic collisions, floods, and animal rescues - and play an active role in the community, working as part of a team to support the wider fire service in helping to keep people safe.

Mr West said: "On the day you can expect to climb ladders, wear breathing apparatus, try out some of our equipment, and speak to serving firefighters about their experiences.

"The aim of the event is to help you decide if being an on-call firefighter is right for you."

The event runs from 10:00 to 13:00 BST.
